A big complaint for those of us who cook with fresh herbs and spices is the tedious work of finely chopping them. Dried herbs and spices do not present this problem because they already come finely minced or chopped.

The laborious chore of preparing herbs and spices cannot be mistaken. This fact is more evident when preparing large dishes. In order to get the herbs and spices to the desired size and texture, the use of a knife and cutting board is customary. For those with inadequate knives, poor cutting skills or individuals who have difficulty holding a knife the option of a herb mill is a pleasant alternative.

Herb mill is a machine that does the job of mincing and chopping without the monotony of manual labor. This amazing device is like a grinder. A herb mill is simple to operate. As with a grinder, the ingredients are placed into a container at located at the top of the machine and then the handle is turned to process the material. The handle moves the blades within and pushes the herbs and spices through. Once the ingredients are completed, they drop into a receiving area below.

Other names for this machine include an electric herb mill, spice mill or a herb grinder. There is an electric version of the herb mill which allows the user to push a button instead of turning a handle.

Many companies manufacture these devices and can be found in home stores everywhere. As with any product, there are different brands to choose from and a wide range of pricing.

When considering a herb mill there are a few things to appraise. First ask, how often will this be used? After judging the amount of utilization, then take into consideration the model and price that matches the need. If the herb mill is not something that will be used in a steady, regular manner, you may want to purchase a less expensive manual crank version.

If you have been cooking with fresh herbs and spices, chances are you’re annoyed with the process of finely chopping herbs for your dishes. This is not a problem when dried herbs and spices are used in preparation for meals, as they already come to you finely minced or chopped.

Chopping or mincing herbs and spices can be an especially tedious task, make more annoying when making large batches of food. Using a sharp knife, and a cutting board is a common way to get your herbs to the texture that you would like to have them. If you have difficulty holding knives, or do not have very sharp ones, or do not have a good technique then it may be a good idea to purchase an herb mill.

If you would like to use a machine that automates this process, an herb mill may be appropriate. This kitchen tool uses a concept similar to a grinder. Simply pour the ingredients into the hopper or receptacle above, and turn handle on the appliance. As you turn the handle, the ingredients will pass through the blades and fall into a holding area below.

These machines can also be referred to as an herb grinder, spice mill, or even an electric herb mill. The electric version is similar to a blender, in that it is push button remote, and not dependent upon turning the handle like a crank.

These products can be found in many home stores, and are manufactured by many different companies. There should be different brands available to choose from in most stores, with varying prices.

When purchasing one of these for your own use, it’s important to consider how often you will actually use it in your kitchen. Carefully weigh the amount of time you intend to use it when comparing different models and prices. If you do not plan to use it often, then a cheaper model that uses manpower to grind with the handle may be acceptable.
