What to Look For In An Herb Mill?
If you have been cooking with fresh herbs and spices, chances are you’re annoyed with the process of finely chopping herbs for your dishes. This is not a problem when dried herbs and spices are used in preparation for meals, as they already come to you finely minced or chopped.
Chopping or mincing herbs and spices can be an especially tedious task, make more annoying when making large batches of food. Using a sharp knife, and a cutting board is a common way to get your herbs to the texture that you would like to have them. If you have difficulty holding knives, or do not have very sharp ones, or do not have a good technique then it may be a good idea to purchase an herb mill.
If you would like to use a machine that automates this process, an herb mill may be appropriate. This kitchen tool uses a concept similar to a grinder. Simply pour the ingredients into the hopper or receptacle above, and turn handle on the appliance. As you turn the handle, the ingredients will pass through the blades and fall into a holding area below.
These machines can also be referred to as an herb grinder, spice mill, or even an electric herb mill. The electric version is similar to a blender, in that it is push button remote, and not dependent upon turning the handle like a crank.
These products can be found in many home stores, and are manufactured by many different companies. There should be different brands available to choose from in most stores, with varying prices.
When purchasing one of these for your own use, it’s important to consider how often you will actually use it in your kitchen. Carefully weigh the amount of time you intend to use it when comparing different models and prices. If you do not plan to use it often, then a cheaper model that uses manpower to grind with the handle may be acceptable.
